A New Year

"I do not plan to start anew in January

that is for spring

this is the night

in the dead of winter

where I pare back excess

to reach the bones of my life." ~ JJ

Every time as the new year approaches there is this push to set goals, become better, start afresh, and it can be so exhausting. This push is inevitably followed by some failure, disappointment or discouragement. So maybe, just maybe we weren't supposed to start anew in January but to slow down in the wintering time of life and embrace the rest and dormancy of our lives.

During this time, instead of pushing for more and more, I am trying to subtract things in my life to have the space for the things that are important, my faith, my family, my friends. While in my business I may be making goals and writing down dreams and inspiration, I am also trying to say "no" to those things that don't line up with my business vision and to not get caught up in the need to run myself into the ground. What I have found is a profound sense of peace, an anchor through my faith which I can lean upon and trust when things are rough and opportunities to see the beauty I am surround with through my family and everyday wonder.

"“Plants and animals don’t fight the winter; they don’t pretend it’s not happening and attempt to carry on living the same lives that they lived in the summer. They prepare. They adapt. They perform extraordinary acts of metamorphosis to get them through. Winter is a time of withdrawing from the world, maximizing scant resources, carrying out acts of brutal efficiency and vanishing from sight; but that’s where the transformation occurs. Winter is not the death of the life cycle, but its crucible.” ~Katherine May

This has become one of my favorite quotes over the last year because I have had a lot of moments that forced me into a "wintering" season of life. These times have helped me develop a more creative life and pace that isn't as exhausting as it used to be.

So, as I goal set, dream and work, I partner that with rest, peace, and creativity.
